Keeping healthy and happy with your dog

stairlift rental

Dogs can have a wonderful impact on our mental, emotional and physical wellbeing and it is possible to find a four legged companion that can fit in with your mobility levels as long as you are able to get out and about to some degree.

Their loving nature and loyalty makes them wonderful companions.

Owning a dog encourages us to go outside for regular exercise that we may not have the impetus to do otherwise.

But as we age we do need to be sensible about the amount of exercise we can take and consider our own capabilities. Sticking to a regular routine even for short walks is beneficial and shows your four-legged friend that they can rely on the structure to give them a sense of security.

If you are finding it difficult to get out in winter there are many professional dog walkers who can walk your dog as and when you need them to and they will usually fit in with your routine. This can also help you dog socialise as, once the walker understands your dog’s natural behaviour around other animals and people, they can walk them with other dogs in smaller or larger groups in a way which best suits the dog.

If you are having difficulty getting your dog to do what you want, you may want to consider using a dog trainer. This way you can ensure that your dog is trained to be a helpful and trusty companion at a time when you might not be able to handle a slightly less obedient pet.

It’s always a good idea to plan in case of accidents and injuries. So it may help to make sure that you have an emergency plan in place including having the vets telephone number in a handy place and knowing the best route to get to the vet.

Having someone nearby who can look after your dog while you are away is a good idea; this could be a neighbour, friend, family member or a professional house sitter. By putting plans such as this in place, you won’t be worrying about what to do or who to call should something happen.

You could also consider using an online virtual vet service for any minor concerns including Just Answer, The VG, and Virtual Veterinary Services.

Make the most of every day with your dog – they are such loyal, faithful companions who can bring out the best in us!
